How the prediction desk works
The predictions desk treats each fixture as a probability distribution, not a coin flip. We blend ball-by-ball projection (expected runs and wickets across the innings arc) with venue-specific scoring rates and team-level match-up data. The output is a win probability with explicit bands, plus the small handful of match-specific uncertainties that the model cannot see (e.g., a late injury, a venue-related toss decision).

Inside the prediction desk
The base model is a ball-by-ball simulation. We aggregate 10,000 simulations per fixture, varying the inputs within empirical ranges (batter strike rate, bowler economy, venue run rate, dew factor). The output is a probability mass function on final scores for both teams.
Venue-specific data is layered on top. Each venue has a historical run-rate baseline, a dew-factor adjustment (relevant in evening T20s in India), and a boundary-dimension adjustment. We refresh the venue dataset at the start of each calendar quarter.
Match-up data is the third layer. We track batter-vs-bowler match-ups from the past 24 months. A left-handed batter against a left-arm spinner has different expected outcomes than a right-handed batter against the same bowler.
Toss and playing-XI data is folded in at the model-recalibration step, which runs 30 minutes before scheduled toss. We re-weight the simulation to the confirmed playing XIs rather than the projected ones.
Confidence bands are explicit. A "65% / 35%" output means we are 65% confident in team A and 35% in team B. The band carries an uncertainty range (e.g., 60-70%) that reflects the model’s residual uncertainty after the playing-XI confirmation.
The model is not a betting line. It does not incorporate market odds. The output is the desk’s independent view of the probability, with caveats. We are an editorial desk, not a sportsbook.
